AN INTRODUCTION FROM THE COLLEGE'S FOUNDATION CHAIR, EMINENT PROFESSOR SUE BEETON

As a past graduate and teacher at William Angliss Institute, I am delighted to be returning as the Foundation Chair of the College of Eminent Professors. The College comprises internationally renowned academics working in the Institute’s specialisation fields, many of whom have strong practitioner backgrounds. Being in a position to work with staff from across the Institute is exciting, as I know there is a breadth and depth of expertise here, from the VET to the Higher Education areas. I know I speak for all the Professors when I say we are looking forward to not only mentoring and working with all staff, but also in helping to enhance the already high reputation of William Angliss Institute.

Biography

Prof Beeton is a travel and tourism researcher and writer. She became involved in tourism through guiding horseback tours, and witnessed first-hand the growth of tourism and its effects on local communities.  Prof. Beeton has conducted tourism-based research into community development, film-induced tourism and nature-based tourism.

As well as producing numerous academic papers and related media articles, she has published five books, including Ecotourism: a practical guide for rural communities, Beeton’s Guide to Adventure Horse Riding, Community Development Through Tourism, Film-Induced Tourism and Tourism and the Moving Image, as well as the second edition of Film-Induced Tourism due in 2016.

In addition to her role at William Angliss Institute, Prof Beeton is founder and past president of the Asia Pacific chapter of the Travel and Tourism Research Association (TTRA) and Board Member of TTRA International, an Honorary Associate Professor at Latrobe University, Australia and visiting Professor at University of Macerata, Italy.

Biography

Ken Albala is Professor of History at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California and Chair of the Food Studies MA program in San Francisco. He is the author or editor of 24 books on food including academic monographs, encyclopedias, handbooks, cookbooks and popular food histories. He was co-editor of the journal Food, Culture and Society, and now edits Rowman and Littlefield Studies in Food and Gastronomy.

Biography

Tom Baum is a Professor and Head of the Department of Human Resource Management in the Strathclyde Business School, University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and a specialist in the study of employment, education and training in the context of the international tourism and hospitality industry. He has over 35 years’ experience in vocational and higher education and specialises in workforce planning, curriculum development, programme design and assessment. Tom has published ten books and over 175 scientific papers in the context of vocational education and training. He has supervised over 35 PhD students to completion and acted as External Examiner to over 50 doctorates in 6 countries. He is frequently invited to address international conferences and events, most recently in Croatia, Korea, Malaysia, Slovenia and Spain.

Biography

Dr. Hendee holds a PhD. and M.A. in foods and food management from New York University, an M.S. in computer education and B.S. in food service education from Johnson & Wales University, and an A.O.S. from the Culinary Institute of America. She is certified by the American Culinary Federation as a Certified Culinary Educator and awarded fellow of The American Academy of Chefs. Awards include the Presidential Medallion for National Chair for Accreditation, representation as leading woman culinarian at Taiwan's 20th culinary exposition and membership on the Women’s National Taskforce.

Dr. Hendee teaches hospitality, foods and culinary management with emphasis on gastronomy and cultural foods.  Her research is in “emotional intelligence” and computerization. Publications include dissertation online, food encyclopaedia, culinary magazines and association ethics.  She held administrative offices in higher education and management positions to include Marriott and PepsiCo Inc. Consults have been conducted regionally, nationally and internationally.

Biography

A lecturer and researcher specialising in hospitality, Conrad Lashley has co-authored and edited sixteen books and more than 100 articles published in academic journals and conference reports. In addition to having served as editor-in-chief of the trade journal Hospitality Review and co-editor of Research in Hospitality Management and being the emeritus editor of Hospitality & Society, Professor Lashley has also worked closely with various businesses, conducting commercial research and acting as a consultant. Professor Lashley’s primary research interest is hospitable behaviour as a potential source of competitive advantage.

Biography

Oswin Maurer is an innovative academic with extensive international experience in key roles such as the implementation of internationally-accredited undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programmes. His areas of interest and expertise include strategic market management, international business, food industry management, internationalisation, and tourism management/economics.

Oswin has authored/co-authored a wide range of publications and has been instrumental in designing and implementing educational projects for senior management and government officials in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Asia. He has also been key in the development of various international and national research programmes on internationalisation, competitiveness and demographic change.

In addition, he is a much sought-after advisor and research consultant and is a key contributor in the building and leadership of an international research network, the Competence Centre in Tourism Management and Tourism Economics (TOMTE). TOMTE organises conferences and seminars every year, including the Consumer Behaviour in Tourism Symposium (CBTS) which takes place annually since 2008 in Brunico.

Biography

Until 2009, Alison was Vice-Dean (Research) of the Strathclyde Business School at the University of Strathclyde. Prior to this she was Head of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management (formerly The Scottish Hotel School).  This was followed by a role as Professor of Hospitality at Surrey University, and Head of School of International Business, Victoria University in Melbourne. Alison has been publishing extensively and teaching since 1984, primarily in her specialist area of small and entrepreneurial hospitality and tourism businesses. Within the field of hospitality key contributions have been made through the co-edited books In Search of Hospitality and Hospitality a Social Lens. She has taught entrepreneurship in hospitality and tourism extensively overseas at universities in, such as, Austria, the Netherlands, Finland, New Zealand, Canada, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Australia, Lapland, Iran and Mauritius.
