Angliss hosts annual AusTAFE competition

William Angliss Institute hosted 18 apprentice and non-apprentice cookery students to compete in the 2017 AusTAFE Culinary Competition.

Each competitor was required to serve five dishes which were judged on creativity, hygiene, presentation, cooking skills, taste and served within set time constraints – all essential criteria.  All dishes presented were of an exceptionally high standard with students receiving three silver medals and thirteen bronze medals.  (There were no gold medals awarded at this year's competition due to points lost for late service).

Four talented students will now move into the Victorian Finals – Astrie Nuriman Saputra (highest scoring competitor on the day) and Worapak Woraphon (Non-Apprentice Division) and Jaymz Harris and Matt Perry (Second Year Apprentice Division).

These students have the opportunity to represent William Angliss Institute in the National AusTAFE finals later in the year.

The AusTAFE judging panel consisted of members of industry and staff including, Tom Capell from The Big Group and Shannon Easton from Craig's Royal Hotel, Ballarat, cookery teachers David Gilligan, Sam Pannone, Luke Rogers, Marie Ryan, Gabi McCarthy and Brett Sinclair.

Competition organiser, cookery teacher Jan Watson said participating in competitions was an important way for students to test their skills, build confidence and get additional exposure to industry expectations.
