Port Douglas placements for Angliss students

Three current William Angliss Institute students are on work placement at the idyllic Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort Port Douglas.

Studying the Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Lecksudha Purboo and Rumbi Mangi are on-site at the prestigious beachfront resort, surrounded by tropical gardens and saltwater lagoons completing their one-year work placement.

Lecksudha Purboo is training as a Guest Service Attendant in Housekeeping and gaining experience in other departments including Sales and Marketing and Human Resources.

“The placement year is not only helping me financially but is also building my resume. I now have a true picture of a workplace in the hospitality industry,” Lecksudha said.

“After my graduation, I’ll still be working in the hospitality industry. However, I will also try the management training programmes, which are offered by some hotels until I have a good understanding of all the different departments. Then, I’ll decide whether I’ll move towards management or working directly with the public in front of house,” Lecksudha said.

In 2016 Lecksudha took part in the Higher Education mentoring program at the Institute and communicated with her mentor via email while on placement.

“I achieved my intentions of starting to build networks within the industry, and to improve my communication skills and build new relationships - connecting with people from the industry is as important as acquiring the degree for me.

Fellow tourism and hospitality management degree student, Rumbi Mangi is working as a Team Leader in the Housekeeping Department at the Sheraton and also training in the Reservations and Front Office Departments.

“My experience as a team leader is invaluable for my future and I want to gain more exposure in the hotel industry, I want to work my way up to managerial positions, with the help of my training and education at William Angliss Institute,” Rumbi said.

“It has helped me to narrow down within the industry to what I want to focus on and potentially specialise in. William Angliss Institute has helped me realise this through practical learning and career expos and seminars.”

“During my course, lecturers would bring in industry specialists as guest speakers who gave us insight into their respective positions and industries. We also had opportunities to go on field trips to different areas increasing our exposure to the many facets of hospitality and tourism.”

In addition to the tourism placements, student Stephen Kho has been placed as a Commis Chef. Working in tropical paradise has been a great reward for Stephen’s dedication and commitment and he sees this placement as one of the building blocks for his career.

“My ultimate goal is to complete my Bachelor in Culinary Management. I want to be a Chef de Partie, in either an Australian restaurant or a hotel, using the knowledge and skills that I have attained studying at William Angliss Institute.”

As a specialist centre in foods, hospitality, tourism and events training, William Angliss Institute offers a range of courses including a new suite of tourism degrees which will be introduced 2018, including Bachelor of Tourism, Bachelor of Tourism (Ecotourism), and Bachelor of Tourism (Marketing).
