An advanced level qualification for individuals working professionally with sake and/or the sake enthusiast who wishes to develop and expand their expertise in sake.


There is no prerequisite study for this course. However, successful completion of Level 1 Award in Sake is strongly recommended.

Once you have registered for the WSET Level 3 course a two-week online pre-study module is available. This WSET online programme provides baseline knowledge and must be completed prior to starting the classroom-based learning. Expect to spend 5 – 14 hours with this online material, and an additional 25 hours of preparation and review over the duration of the course, outside of the classroom.

You must be of legal drinking age in Australia (18 years of age) if you are attending the course and wish to participate in any alcohol tasting.


This course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the key ingredients and production methods that affect the style, quality and price of sake.

You will be able to develop your systematic tasting and assessment skills of sake and be able to use this information and your understanding of sake to make authoritative recommendations. WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting® (SAT)

You will have the opportunity to experience an extensive range of principal and speciality types of sake, evaluating quality, identity and price. You will gain a thorough understanding of the categorisation of sake.

You will gain an appreciation for the historic and current cultural and commercial significance of sake in Japan and its export markets including Australia.

You will be able to confidently assess and describe sake and be able to make selection, storage and service suggestions for the many varieties of sake.


  • You will be provided with a WSET Study Pack including a comprehensive textbook.
  • Tutored tasting of all sake styles specified by WSET under the guidance of Melissa Mills who is a certified WSET Sake Educator and International Wine Challenge Sake Judge.
  • Study support and exercise corrections provided by email and/or WhatsApp by Melissa post-registration until course completion.


The course content can be divided into two main units. Unit 1 is theory orientated and Unit 2 is related to the practical tasting of sake. Unit 1 is assessed by a closed-book exam consisting of 50 multiple choice questions and a paper requiring short written answers. Unit 2 is assessed by a blind tasting of two sake. Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin and you will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.
