Our Assessment Process
How Our Assessment Works
At William Angliss Institute, we conduct high-integrity skills assessments under the Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) and Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP) frameworks. Our process is designed to be fair, transparent, and genuinely supportive for culinary professionals worldwide.
Assessment Programs
We are authorised to deliver assessments under two main TRA programs:
- Temporary Skills Shortage Program (TSS)
For candidates applying for the Skills in Demand (SID) visa (subclass 482) who are working in a nominated occupation and hold a passport from a TRA-nominated country or Special Administrative Region.
- Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP)
For OSAP-nominated country candidates applying for a skilled migration visa (excluding subclass 485 and TSS visas) to work in a nominated occupation.
Important Note: You do not need to be offshore to apply. Onshore applicants in Australia are welcome for both programs.
Assessment Pathways
We assess applicants under two clear pathways:
Pathway 1 (Stream C) – No Relevant Australian Qualification
- No Australian VET qualification required.
- Focus: Demonstrating your trade skills align with Australian commercial standards.
- Involves Stage 1 (Documentary Evidence Assessment) and Stage 2 (Technical Interview).
- Successful applicants receive both a TRA Outcome Letter and a formal AQF qualification from William Angliss Institute.
- Total TRA Fee: AUD $3,120
Pathway 2 (Stream B) – With Relevant Australian Qualification
- Requires a relevant Australian VET qualification.
- Focus: Demonstrating your application of workplace skills in an Australian commercial kitchen or commercial retail bakery.
- Involves Stage 1 and Stage 2.
- Successful applicants receive a TRA Outcome Letter.
- Total TRA Fee: AUD $2,020
Assessment Stages
Stage 1: Documentary Evidence Assessment
After registration and payment of the first fee to TRA, you finalise your submission of assessment-ready evidence including identity documents, employment references, payslips, qualifications (if any), photos, videos, and menus demonstrating your work.
Our assessors review your submitted evidence and determine whether your documented skills and experience meet Australian industry standards. Strong, well-organised evidence significantly improves your chance of progressing to Stage 2.
Stage 2: Technical Interview
If you pass Stage 1, you will be invited to a competency-based Technical Interview with one of our experienced industry assessors.
Focus of the Technical Interview
- Pathway 1: Demonstrating that your trade skills align with Australian commercial standards.
- Pathway 2: Demonstrating the application of workplace skills in an Australian commercial kitchen or retail bakery environment.
The interview typically covers:
- Your practical skills and daily responsibilities
- Decision-making and problem-solving in a commercial kitchen or bakery
- Knowledge of Australian food safety standards (FSANZ)
- Alignment with relevant units of competency (Knowledge Evidence and Performance Evidence)
- Review of additional evidence (videos, referee statements, etc.)
Interview Options
- Remote Technical Interview — Available worldwide via secure video platform (most popular choice).
- Face-to-Face Technical Interview — Available at our Melbourne campus (highly recommended for Victorian applicants).
- Overseas Face-to-Face Interviews — Periodically conducted in selected countries when demand is sufficient.
