Angliss events student volunteers at the Commonwealth Games

Currently studying the Advanced Diploma of Events Management, Lauren Marcon took the opportunity to volunteer at the Commonwealth games on the Gold Coast recently.

Given the fancy title of Spectator Services Supervisor at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in Broadbeach, Lauren’s main responsibility was to ensure operational plans were implemented while leading and supervising a large team of 100 volunteers.

From managing shift breaks to attending regular debrief sessions with the management team, Lauren acquired many new skills around event management and learned how an event is organised and run behind the scenes in a fast-paced and high pressure environment.

Of her time at the games Lisa says, “It was fantastic to be able to put in place the skills I have learned and gained through studying event management at William Angliss, my volunteering roles and placement work that I have been involved in.”

Volunteering has been a great motivator for Lauren to continue being involved in the events industry. She has also volunteered at other prominent events such as Spring Racing Carnival where she managed a team in promoting the race carnival events and at the Starlight Foundation, Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, Sour Sons Gala Ball, The Big Meet and Hair and Beauty Expo.

Lauren is confident she will secure full time work after she completes her studies in 2018.

“The experience at the Commonwealth Games was memorable and I know it will help me secure a full time job in the sports and event industry.”
