Data competition goes to the Big Apple

For the second year, William Angliss Institute entered the STR Student Market Study competition held in New York.

STR Market Study Nov 2017

The competition is conducted by STR, a global travel research company that is widely utilised in the hotel industry to benchmark individual hotels performance in their respective markets.

The student  team comprised of undergraduates; Bronwyn Lee, Idan Korn, Katie Faithfull, Kevin Ohlen and Yuliia Syzochenko, collected an honourable mention for their study using actual data focused on the Perth hotel market. The group faced stiff competition against more than 30 US, and global hotel schools.

Vice President of STR, Duane Vinson said “We were thrilled with the student presentations this year and it was evident that your students put in many hours to create a high quality, professional presentation. They represented your school well and should be proud.”

The students spent six weeks analysing information, along with generous assistance from revenue managers with direct industry experience in the study market, including Kristy McGowan, Director of Revenue and Distribution Crown Resorts and Scott Nicholas, Director of Revenue Grand Hyatt Melbourne.

Market study information is used by investors, hotel owners and hotel operators to assess their operating environment and to inform decision making.

The team spent five days in New York visiting and competing at the show. They enjoyed lunch at the Grand Hyatt with Directors of Revenue Hyatt Centric and Grand Hyatt and went ice-skating in the winter village at the famous Bryant Park.

Laurin Fortune, Lecturer in the Faculty of Higher Education said, “A highlight this year for our students was lunch at the Grand Hyatt New York with the Revenue Management team, which brought a global perspective to their understanding of the industry.”
