Simulated experience - students receive award in Bali

Six final year students from William Angliss Institute travelled to Bali to participate in an international hotel, restaurant and education conference and accepted an award for second place in a simulated challenge.

The students included Hsiao Chin Lu (Rebecca), Don Ruwan Thilanka Liyanage, Yuliia Syzochenko and Michael Guinto who are studying the Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management, with Katie Faithful and Hoon How (Howard) Law studying Bachelor of Culinary Management.
These students took part in a simulation University Challenge as part of the 15th Asia Pacific Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (APacCHRIE) Conference 2017.
This simulation competition was held among hospitality schools in the Asia Pacific region over six weeks of the semester. The group competed against four other tourism institutes from the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and Taiwan. Using REVsim simulation software, each team managed a hotel for 12 months and were ranked according to the best balanced scorecard.
Higher Education Lecturer Emma Gronow said the students performed exceptionally well and came in a very close second to the winning team from Taiwan.
“Students also presented a poster of their research at the conference entitled: #LETSWINTHIS – SOLO lessons from a revenue management simulation competition,” Ms Gronow said.
The Institute financially assisted with these trips plus the students also contributed with their own fundraising ventures.
“Along with the excitement of travel and accepting their award, the team really enjoyed the simulation challenge. The students said it was a fun and challenging experience with teamwork as one of the highlights.”
