William Angliss Institute

Through to the finals of AusTAFE Culinary Competition

William Angliss Institute hosted 19 apprentice and non-apprentice cookery students to compete in the 2018 AusTAFE Culinary Competition.

Each competitor was required to serve two to three five dishes which were judged on creativity, hygiene, presentation, cooking skills, taste and served within set time constraints – all essential criteria. All dishes presented were of an exceptionally high standard with students receiving one gold, three silver and nine bronze medals.

Fong Wei Liao who scored the gold medal on the day spent many hours preparing for the competition, practising and refining his dishes and speaking to teachers. For most students this was their first experience in cooking competitions

The top five talented students now have the opportunity to represent William Angliss Institute in the National AusTAFE finals later in the year, being held at the Melbourne Fine Food Show.

The AusTAFE judging panel consisted of members of industry and staff including, Lisa Bolle from The Big Group and Alannah Head from the Riverland Group, alongside Cookery teachers Luke Rogers, Marie Ryan, Gabi McCarthy, Garry Blackburn, Dale Lyman and Debra Tadday

Competition organiser, culinary coordinator and teacher Jan Watson said participating in competitions was an important way for students to test their skills, build confidence and get additional exposure to industry expectations.
