A team of Angliss higher education students had success at the STR Student Market Study Competition held at the HX Hotel Experience Show in New York in November 2016.
It was the first and only time an Australian institution has competed and also a first for Higher Education students from William Angliss Institute to participate in a global competition.
They were awarded second place out of 12 universities in the category (non-finalist undergraduate) and received an honourable mention award.
Thandiwe Soko, Rieko Indra, Miles Diez, Chalice Madacki and Hoang Manh Tuan Vu (Stefan) studied a Revenue Management subject as part of the Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality Management and Bachelor of Culinary Management.
The team presented findings from researching the performance of the Melbourne hotel market. The students utilised data provided by STR (a leader in global hotel research and benchmarking service) to assess market drivers, financial performance, longitudinal trends and market pipeline.
There were several Canadian Universities, one from the Sorbonne, with the remainder of teams from across the US.
The students were very proud to represent the Institute and felt their success reflected the world class education provided at William Angliss Institute.
Feedback from the STR judges was extremely positive, particularly noting the quality of information the students presented.
The students were supported by their faculty advisors Laurin Fortune and Emma Gronow. Industry mentors David Perry CEO of The Windsor and Nathan Copsey GM of The Mantra on Jolimont also provided invaluable support to the team.
